CalPERS serves the State of California, contracting public agencies, and school districts and charter schools. Nearly 3,000 employers who contract with CalPERS for retirement, death, and survivor benefits.

CalPERS provides health benefits for all state agencies. Nearly 1,200 other public agencies and schools contract with CalPERS to provide health benefits to their employees. Public agency and school employers may contract with us to provide their employees’ health benefits regardless of whether they contract for retirement benefits.

In addition, CalPERS provides actuarial services on pension plans for state, school, and public agency employers and uses periodic actuarial valuations to disclose funded status and determine employer contribution requirements.

As California's State Social Security administrator, we provide information about Social Security and Medicare coverage for state and local government employees.
